September 11, 2001…. A decade removed

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

I cannot believe that it has been 10 years since this awful day came upon us. So much has changed in my life and the world since then. On the afternoon of September 11, 2001 I was laying in my bed over in Bordeaux, France as I was tired from going out the night before with my teammates, then completing morning workouts with my team JSA Bordeaux. At 2:55PM(French Time) my cell phone rings and I ignore it. It immediately rings again so I answer it, and it’s my translator/French teacher on the line yelling at me to get up and turn on my TV. I asked her “Why”, and she responds, “Your President (Bush) is on TV”, and I quickly respond, “I don’t care, I didn’t vote for him.” She then says, “A plane has been flown into a building in New York.” I then get up, go into my living room and turn on the TV which I never watched because my cable wasn’t installed yet and all the stations were in French. So on the French Station Canal Plus I see a live video feed via CNN (being translated over in French) of one of the World Trade Center buildings on fire very high up. It didn’t look as if a plane had flown into the building from what I saw, but then all of a sudden a plane can be seen flying into the screen and crashing into the other Tower!! I drop the phone and immediately wonder what the hell is happening. I pinch myself to make sure this isn’t a dream or some sick joke the French are playing on the Americans that they love to hate. I pick the phone up and then a few minutes later Bush starts to speak but again its being translated over in French. She informs me that Bush is informing the world that the U.S. is under attack by terrorist. I then think how am I going to get back home because I’m damn sure not getting on another plane if terrorist are flying planes into buildings! I’m the only American on this team thousands of miles away from home and at this point you can’t get a phone call into the U.S.! So after listening to my translator tell me what was being said on CNN, I forget that my brother is in the military and a country away in Spain so I tell her that I will call her back later. I then dial my oldest brother and he is in the bed sleep also as he worked at night. I’m nervous as ever and say, “Bro this Bobby I need you to wake up, it’s a problem at home.” He replies, “What’s up.” I say, “Man turn on your TV there’s a terrorist attack in New York and two planes have been flown into the World Trade Center Towers.” He says, “What? Hold on a second…. He pauses….. Bobby it’s the Pentagon not the Trade Center man!” We start to argue because French TV is covering the Trade Center attacks and Spanish TV is covering Washington D.C! Almost simultaneously both stations switch cities and I see the Pentagon and he sees the Towers! His other phone then rings and he says man I got to go onto the base. I say, “Please call me as soon as you find out more!” I’m completely terrified at this time as I’m not sure where else or what else would be hit. In my home town there’s a Government Nuclear Facility so who knows what’s going on or what’s going to happen! I then jump up throw some clothes on and drive downtown Bordeaux where there’s an Internet Café that had some American channels. I get there and the place is packed but the owner immediately notices me and says “Monsieur Bobby come.” He gets me right in from of the TV and I sit there for hours watching the reports pour in, from the other plane that crashed in Pennsylvania to the fact that the Towers actually fell on my drive over to the café. It was a horrible feeling which I will never forget. I haven’t been the same since, and neither will the U.S. At times like that, in places like that you realize that you aren’t white or black, but that you are an American!!! I then go to the U.S. Embassy to be with my PEOPLE!!! Those would be AMERICANS!!! Where were you on 9/11/2001?
